DEVELOPMENT
As a small team, myself and other members collaborated over story beats and how to tell the story. Knowing the team would remain small, I prioritised designing the film to be as production friendly as possible such as repeating backgrounds, creating spooks and anticipation with easy to animate light flickers and having Joe (protagonist) stay within the elevator throughout the film.
There were unique challenges, such as how to keep the film interesting and show reactionary back and forth while keeping the layout and setting consistent. To assist in this, I created a mock up of the layout in 3D (Blender) to be able to explore with the camera and easily try things out.
The process at this stage was sketchy and experimental. Being pre-completion of character concept art, I had a general description to work from but otherwise I was to consider acting beats, composition and just how best to tell the story.
With character and background concept art further underway, the next stage included the creation of a revised animatic with updated storyboards and finalising exactly what shots and beats we would be going with prior to production.
There were also sketches and idea generation for credits sequences, below are unused concepts showing Joe integrating into the workplace!
PRODUCTION
With Revised Storyboard complete and tested with audiences, our small team moved onto production. For me, this meant 2D Animating (Keyframes and Inbetweens), Clean Up and Compositing for several shots throughout the film.
THE FINAL FILM
B3 was first available to the public at DJCAD Degree Show (2024) to a very positive reception alongside the other animated shorts at the event.
